Foreclosure Prevention and Assistance

Help is available for households who are in danger of foreclosure or already in the foreclosure process. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has published Tips for Avoiding Foreclosure, which offers a wealth of information and resources. Other organizations also offer information, counseling and assistance.

How to Avoid Foreclosure (PDF, 82k); – This booklet published by HUD describes ways to avoid losing your home and damaging your credit history.
Home Loan Learning Center Foreclosure Prevention Resource Center – This website powered by the mortgage bankers association offers education and resources for homeowners facing foreclosure. Click here for a list of 50 lenders and loan servicers and their foreclosure prevention contact information. If you are having trouble making your mortgage payments, you should contact your mortgage lender immediately.
Homeownership Preservation Foundation – This nonprofit organization offers free foreclosure prevention counseling by HUD-approved counselors to any homeowner in America. Help is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
